AI labs Decart and Etched just launched Oasis – an AI model that can generate playable video game environments in real-time. They’ve even created a Minecraft-style demo to show it off.
Oasis is no slow-poke – it can respond to keyboard and mouse inputs to generate game environments, complete with physics, item interactions, and dynamic lighting, all at a smooth 20 frames per second. That’s 100 times faster than typical AI video generation models.
The companies are giving the public a peek under the hood too. They’re releasing the Oasis code, a 500 million parameter model for local testing, and a playable demo of an even larger version.
And this is just the beginning. Future Oasis models will be able to run in 4K resolution on Etched’s upcoming Sohu chip, with the ability to support 10 times as many users and massive 100 billion+ parameter models.
Why does this matter? While text-to-video has been grabbing the headlines, Oasis represents something deeper – the ability to generate entire interactive worlds using AI.
This could revolutionize game development and virtual environments, potentially even making traditional game engines obsolete.
